There are two people in the mansion for whom Mark would cheerfully take a bullet, and Terezi is one of them. She's his kid. Not quite in the same way Cindy would be, because...well, Cindy. And also because Terezi still looks out for herself for the most part. Terezi is strong and brave and clever. She doesn't need Mark and he doesn't feel like she needs him, despite the trouble she's been having lately due to canon updating and now murderevent. But he wants to back her up however he can, regardless.
So in that way it's a friendship as much as an adopted parenthood thing, if not moreso.

Currently, post-murdertimes, he's trying to separate the pure and simple pain trauma from her--from her voice and her face. It's going pretty smoothly, all things considered. He privately wants to make sure he's over it before he sees her again, because he doesn't want to hurt her unintentionally. And he's seen her with her feelings legitimately hurt a number of times now, and he doesn't want to be the cause of it, ever.
