Oh hey, it's one of those event things...
Event time!
So, New Years came and went, there were fireworks and alcohol, and it was a grand old time, right? Well that's all well and good, but it was only for one night! And on the wrong day, too! This just will not stand, so to set things right, there's going to be a proper celebration beginning February 7th and ending fifteen days later on the 21st.
First of all, starting on the 7th and all through the celebration, decorations will pop up all around the mansion inside and out. Expect lots of red and gold! There will also be firecrackers and a modest fireworks display every night, building up to the big one on the last night of the festival.
Second, because this is the Year of the Rat, the mansion will play host to several hundred guests for the next two weeks. Rats will be roaming the halls and rooms of the mansion, but don't worry! They aren't exactly normal rats and will be very good house guests...provided the residents are good hosts in turn.
The next big date to remember is the 15th. On that morning, every resident will find a red envelope has been slipped under their door (or if you have a character that doesn't stay in one of the rooms, they will find their envelope shortly after sunrise just lying around nearby). And what's inside? Cash money, of course! The amount varies from a few dollars to several hundred, but there will be more depending on how nice the recipient was to the rats. Children will also get larger amounts.
The rats will still be hanging out and the fireworks will still be awesome, even more so once the red envelopes have been given out.
On the 21st, the main event will happen! Decorations will suddenly include paper lanterns of various sizes and shapes, which will light themselves as the sun goes down. More importantly however, will be the ghosts.
If a resident has died in canon (mansion deaths do not count for this, I'm afraid), they become 'ghosts' for the day. The residents become slightly transparent and 'pastel' colored, they gain the ability to levitate as well as pass through solid objects, as well as turn invisible. They still retain any powers and can interact with their environments, though it takes some concentration to do so.
One limitation however, is that the ghosts will find themselves attracted to lit lanterns. After nightfall, the lanterns will eventually guide the dead residents to the shore of the lake, where a number of paper boats lit with candles will be waiting to lead them across. On the morning of the 22nd, any residents who decided to follow the boats across will be returned, waking up in the mansion as if from a dream, perfectly normal again.
So what's on the other side of the lake? Visions of home. I'm being deliberately vague here since 'home' means something different for every resident, but basically the ghost is given a dream-like visit home. They do not actually go home, that's important to note. The dream can either be happy or bittersweet, it's up to you.
After that, everything is back to normal. The rats are gone, the decorations are all cleaned up, and no more fireworks. It's back to what passes for normal life in Wonderland.
tl;dr version: RODENTS AND MONEY AND GHOSTS, OH MY!
Edit: And of course, direct any questions here. ^_^;;

It's a pity we don't have a Yuki Sohma from Fruits Basket. The poor bastard wouldn't know what hit him, suddenly swimming in a sea of rats attracted to him XDThat's gonna be so awesome :DDDD Waka is from a Japanese (...sort of) based canon, but he'll love the Chinese new year
granted he doesn't accidentally step on a rat with his heels (http://en.citizendium.org/images/thumb/e/eb/Tengu-geta.jpg/200px-Tengu-geta.jpg). Fireworks and tacky decoration motives are the kind of stuff holidays are all about for him!no subject
I WAS THINKING ABOUT APPING HIM A FEW DAYS AGO. >/no subject
They are very agile rodents, and I'm sure they would understand if it was an accident...no subject
