oh hes been told hes a mutant by now! and hes been shown that he can control his powers to focus his telepathy, but he hasnt yet started the memory work. so the only thing he has a tenuous grasp on is his ability to read minds but even then hes not practiced at it. plus he still has a certain someone kicking around in his head 👀
